This body of work examines how artificial intelligence, as a transformative technological force, is reshaping learning and preparation for the future of work. As AI rapidly evolves, educators and institutions face both urgency and opportunity: to design learning experiences that go beyond shortcuts to knowledge, unlock more personalized and inclusive pathways for students, and build the skills needed to use AI thoughtfully and effectively. Our work centers on helping learners and educators adapt with confidence—ensuring students are not only keeping pace with change, but are equipped to thrive in an AI-driven workforce.

Microsoft AI Economy Institute (AIEI) Cohort
WashU researchers were selected to be part of the second cohort of global researchers who are working to understand and accelerate the responsible diffusion of AI across economies, industries, and communities. This cohort’s theme, Education in the AI Economy, explores how AI is reshaping learning and opportunity—and how to ensure those benefits are broadly shared. Building on insights from the first cohort, which showed that AI’s advantages remain uneven and tied to infrastructure, skills, and GDP, this cohort uses education as a driver of inclusive diffusion.
